Verse: And
they, continuing daily with one accord in the temple, and breaking bread from
house to house, did eat their meat with gladness and singleness of heart, Acts
2:46.
INTRODUCTION:
In our last studies we saw the activities of Jesus.
How He was tempted, how he overcame and how he did many things and that
he commanded us to do what he did. In
this study, we shall look at the post ascension activities or what the Apostles
and disciples did after Him. Remember
that these are some of what make them approved and we will do well to do as they
did, so that we can be approved as they were approved.
-
They continued:
Acts 2:42. All that the Lord
taught them and that they were doing immediately He left, they continued
therein. None of them backed out of
the assignment of continuing with others. They
were steadfast and unmovable in their continuity (1 Cor. 15:58).
This is a challenge to us. Heb.10:25,
told us not to forsake the assembling of ourselves.
Some of us are giving up too soon. We
are like Demas who forsook Paul (2 Tim. 4:9-10).
The twelve disciples followed Jesus all through and they did not go back
except for Judas (Acts 1:15-26). They
eventually replaced him for himself left them by purchasing a reward of
iniquity. Those who continued are
the only ones who can make it to the end. It
is only those who endure to the end that will be crowned. Rev. 2:25 says “But
that which ye have already, hold fast till I come.”
Only the overcomers will wear the crown.
Someone says winners never quit and quitters never win.
You can only make it to the end when you continue to follow Him.
Say it like Peter, “To whom shall we go” (John 6:66-69). Why
are people not continuing? (Discuss).
-
They were involved:
Acts 2:42. What were they
doing? As they continued they had
goals. They were active in what
they were doing and these included.
(a) Learning and practicing the Apostles’ doctrine.
(b) Fellowshipping together.
(c) Breaking of bread.
(d) Praying together.
Looking
into these activities none can be done too much.
You and I are to make sure that we do more of what we have been doing.
It takes commitment to sit down to know the Apostles’ doctrine.
For us today, they are the whole counsel of God.
You need to know the whole truth/counsel of God for your life.
Whichever avenue of doing that must be annexed.
Sit down properly and get actively involved in the work of the Lord.
Let us do it together, pray together, study the Bible together,
fellowship together, rejoice together, work together and do all things together
in the spirit of unity. (Acts
1:12-14; Phil. 3:15-16; Eph.5:21). What
do you think are responsible for our inaction in these respect? (Discuss).

They related freely: Acts
2:44-47. The then believers walked
in the same Spirit. They were
together, they had things in common. People
don’t mind parting with their belongings so as to satisfy the need of others.
They were free to eat in one another’s home.
They broke bread and praise God constantly
and so they had favour with the people. This
is a challenge to us today. A life
that takes care of his/herself alone is not christianly.
The present parting spirit of the church is foreign to the body of
Christ. How many can freely come to
your house not to talk of them asking you to meet their need?
We equally see in our own time lazy and never-wanting-to-do anything
brethren. All these are contrary to
God’s plan for His church. See
what Paul advised in 2 Thess. 3:16. Let
us stop our attitude of reading into mind and action of other brethren.
How good and how pleasant it is for brethren to dwell together in unity
says David (Ps. 133). Lack of this
unity of purpose and mind is rubbing us of so many blessings in our lives.
What shall we do?

Evangelism and Mission: Acts
1:8; 26:19. All through the book of
Acts of Apostles, we see the disciples and the early church fully occupied with
preaching the Gospel starting from Jerusalem.
Even when they were persecuted and scattered, they went about doing
nothing but to preach the Gospel (Acts 8:1-4).
While some were separated mainly for mission work, others abode where
they were and continued the work at home (Acts 13:1-4).
You cannot remain idle as a child of God waiting for the return of our
Lord Jesus Christ from heaven. If
we are not doing the work we are not doing well, in fact we are only disobedient
to the heavenly vision. Let
us repent and obey the great commission.
Why don’t you determine today and follow the steps that both
Jesus and His disciples trod while they were around.
Remember that it is for this purpose that the Holy Spirit was given to
you (Acts 1:8).
Don’t waste your master’s talents for you.
Make sure you profit by it and you will be rewarded for so doing.
(Matt. 26:14-30).
Conclusion:
Jesus taught us to follow His steps for the work He
did, He will like us to do even more; others who went before us did all these.
What about you and I? Are we
going to allow His grace to be wasted over us?
God forbid. Rise up and go
in this your might like Gideon of old. God
bless you.
