What Does the Bible Say About … BREAKING CURSES?

How do we break curses?

The biggest curse we are under is sin.  Sin enslaves us to unhealthy habits that are humanly impossible to break free from.  Think of the sex addicts, serial murderers, thieves… Ask them if it is possible to break free from their curse.  They may try for a while, but before you know it, they are back in their vice, with no hope of deliverance.

Gal 3:10 “All who rely on observing the law are under a curse, for it is written: “Cursed is everyone who does not continue to do everything written in the Book of the Law.””  NIV

Must that be so?  Is there really no deliverance of these curses?  Is there any hope for the sex addicts and any others enslaved to sin?  Is there hope for the alcoholic and the woman beaters? The answer is yes!

It was made possible thanks to Jesus Christ!

Gal 3:13 “Christ redeemed us from the curse of the law by becoming a curse for us, for it is written: “Cursed is everyone who is hung on a tree.””  NIV

Jesus carried our curse on the cross.  We should be the one dying on that cross.  Instead He decided to carry that cross for us so that we could be free!  However freedom does not come without a price. “Do I have to send money to be free?” Not at all!  “Do I have to do something to be free?” Not really.  The only thing that will set you free is to accept Jesus’ offer and decide for yourself to be led by Jesus and not by your inner desires any longer.

John 3:16 “For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.”  NIV

My friend, if you are living under bondage of sin, may it be sex, drugs, or anything else, God can free you.  Jesus promised John 8:36 “So if the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed.”  NIV

Don’t blame your behaviour on your dad or your grandfather, or your great grandfather.  You and you only are responsible for your actions.  The good news is that forgiveness and deliverance is possible.

Zech 4:6 “Not by might nor by power, but by my Spirit.”  NIV

You can be set free through the power of God’s Holy Spirit!  Jesus made it possible for you to be freed from your addiction.  He paid the ultimate price on Golgotha so you could be freed and be a “new creation”.

2 Cor 5:17-19 “Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; the old has gone, the new has come!  All this is from God, who reconciled us to himself through Christ and gave us the ministry of reconciliation: that God was reconciling the world to himself in Christ, not counting men’s sins against them.  And he has committed to us the message of reconciliation.”  NIV

Rom 6:18 “You have been set free from sin and have become slaves to righteousness.” NIV

Freedom from the curse of your addiction is possible.   Would you like to experience that freedom in your life, here is briefly the steps that will lead you to total freedom.

  1. Accept Jesus as your Saviour into your life (see John 3:16)
  2. Believe in Him with all your heart and believe that He will set you free (James 1:6-8)
  3. Start having a relationship with Jesus.  Converse with Him in prayer.  Share with Him what you are going through and ask for His guidance. (Heb 5:7)
  4. Destroy anything (objects, pictures, books) connected to that sin and put some distance from the people who are still under that curse (Acts 19:19-20)
  5. Invite God’s Spirit to be your guide in your life and claim Jesus’ victory as your victory over your sinful habit. (John 16:13; Romans 6:18)
  6. Praise the Lord for giving you victory.  The praise principle is an important aspect of your victory (see the Praise Principle at http://www.answers2prayer.org/praise_principle.html )

Written prayers from others to be delivered of curses may mean little to you if they are not said from the heart.  You can as well renounce the works of darkness and claim victory in the name of Jesus through your own words, words that you mean, words of hope, being fully convicted of your assured deliverance.

If you have problems doing this yourself, turn to a believer in Jesus who believes in the power of the Holy Spirit.  We are here to help one another!  1 Thess 5:11 “Therefore encourage one another and build each other up, just as in fact you are doing.”  NIV

We have been given great authority through our Saviour Jesus Christ. Please remember, though, that these people are not able to deliver you.  Only Jesus can!

Luke 10:19-20 9 “I have given you authority to trample on snakes and scorpions and to overcome all the power of the enemy; nothing will harm you.  However, do not rejoice that the spirits submit to you, but rejoice that your names are written in heaven.”  NIV

Matt 10:1 “He called his twelve disciples to him and gave them authority to drive out evil spirits and to heal every disease and sickness.”  NIV

Mark 16:17-18 “And these signs will accompany those who believe: In my name they will drive out demons; they will speak in new tongues; they will pick up snakes with their hands; and when they drink deadly poison, it will not hurt them at all; they will place their hands on sick people, and they will get well.”  NIV

John 14:12 “I tell you the truth, anyone who has faith in me will do what I have been doing.  He will do even greater things than these, because I am going to the Father.”  NIV

Is this really true or is this just a bunch of blabla?  I can guarantee you that these promises are true. I have experienced freedom from those curses personally.  Jesus is still alive today! Heb 13:8 “Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today and forever.”  NIV

I had my fair share of habitual sins and no matter what I did; I could not shake them off.  It was so discouraging.  Nothing I did was able to free me completely from these curses.  I could experience temporary victories that lasted a few weeks at the most, but soon I would fall under that bondage again.

Although I was attending a church and was really involved in it’s activities, I was still enslaved in sin. I thought I knew Jesus, but my knowledge was more like the knowledge that there is a president named Bush. Nothing personal about that! Having a relationship with Jesus was a foreign notion to me.  My friend, it is not the church that can free you, it’s only Jesus Christ.  Don’t rely on religion for deliverance.  It won’t work!

I prayed, “Lord, lead me to your truth!” Little did I know that God was already preparing to answer my request!  A few weeks later, I received an invitation by e-mail to attend a Messianic synagogue.  It sounded interesting, and they were only a 2-hour car drive away from where I lived.  Why not try it?

The day I was supposed to go there, my mother-in-law fell and was rushed to the hospital.  I was unable to go.  I should have known that the enemy was trying to discourage me from having a unique experience with God.  However, this did not stop me from making plans to attend at the next possible moment, and the following month, we headed to that place of worship.

As we entered the synagogue, both my wife and myself felt an overwhelming presence: God’s presence through His Holy Spirit was in that place!  I never had felt His presence that way before.  During the service there was prophesying.  The Rabbi’s wife prophesied that there was someone in the congregation that was facing the open door, the door of the Messiah Yeshua.  She was encouraging that person to not hesitate any longer, but to go through that door.  Little did she know that she was prophesying to me.  I thought I knew Jesus, I though I knew my Bible, but that day I tumbled down from my ivory tower and accepted Jesus into my life.  That day, He became real to me, and my whole life changed.

He gave me total victory over the addictions I had struggled with for 30 years. Not temporary victories like the ones I experienced before, but total victory!  His word is true: John 8:36 “So if the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed.”  NIV Complete freedom! Hallelujah!  But even more amazing, after my first encounter with the Holy Spirit, I found I could open my Bible and actually understand it.  I mean really understand it like I never could before!  The difference simple: God’s Spirit was dwelling in me.  Jesus was so right when he said: John 16:13 3 “But when He, the Spirit of truth, comes, He will guide you into all truth.”

God made a difference in my life, He has become my Saviour!  Praise the Lord for leading me to Him!  Although I am not attending that Messianic synagogue and am attending a local church that believes in the power of God, I still enjoy visiting this place of worship where Jesus came so real to me.

Yes, I used to think I was saved.  After all, didn’t I obey all of my church’s doctrines?  Didn’t I try to read my Bible?  Didn’t I try to pray?  Didn’t I…?  But I learned that being saved is not about what I can do, it’s about what God does in a person’s life.  Jesus came on this earth to die in my place, to save me from eternal damnation.  He saved me through His own blood!  Jesus loved me!  Jesus loves me!  He manifested that love by making His dwelling place in me, through His Holy Spirit!  Praise to God!

All my life I went to church without knowing my Saviour.  All of my life I tried to earn heaven, but I never succeeded.  Jesus made the difference in my life!  And He is willing to make a difference in your life, too!  Will you let Him into your life?  Stop being “religious”.  Stop trying to earn your way to Heaven, because you will never succeed.  Let Jesus come into your life, and you will become victorious!  Let Him into your life, and the Bible will start to become clear to you.  Let Him come into your life, and “when He, the Spirit of truth, comes, He will guide you into all truth.” Won’t you do that now? Accept His call at http://www.answers2prayer.org/saviours_call.html. Believe in your deliverance of your curse through Him.  Invite His Spirit in you.  He will set you free!  Victory is yours!  Guaranteed!  Jesus paid the price for you 2000 years ago.

1 Cor 15:57 “But thanks be to God!  He gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ.”  NIV

P.S How should we react to those who introduced us into the curses that led us to bondage?  How should we react generally to anyone who curses us?

The Bible encourages us to do the following:

Luke 6:28 “Bless those who curse you, pray for those who mistreat you.”  NIV

Rom 12:14 “Bless those who persecute you; bless and do not curse.”  NIV

One day all these curses will be gone forever!  What a day that will be!

Rev 22:3 “No longer will there be any curse.  The throne of God and of the Lamb will be in the city, and his servants will serve him.”  NIV

Rob Chaffart

P.S. A great book on this is “The Bondage Breaker” and “Victory Over The Darkness” by Neil Anderson.  It is available in any Christian bookstore and will be of tremendous help to you.

If we are of God and live according to His scriptures and teachings, we cannot be cursed. By living accordingly we are free from any bondage of any curse of the evil one. Proverbs 26:2. A curse is: “Like a flitting sparrow, like a flying swallow. So a curse without cause shall not alight.” Therefore, a curse requires a cause to alight upon someone.

Some of these are as follows:

Having false gods (Exodus 20:3&4, Deuteronomy 27:15)

Disrespect for parents (Deuteronomy 27:16)

Treachery against a neighbor (Deuteronomy 27:17)

Injustice to the weak (Deuteronomy 27:18&19)

Illicit sex (Deuteronomy 27:20-23) (Effect of wrong sexual relationships, particularly those outside of marriage or with members of one’s family) Perjury (Deuteronomy 27:25)

Stealing (Zechariah 5:1-4)

Stinginess towards God (Malachi 3:9)

Perverting gospel (Galatians 1:8&9)

Depending on the flesh (Jeremiah 17:5)

In order to break free from a curse, we must recognize that there is a curse. We must repent from all sin. We must renounce in the name of Jesus Christ. We must resist, eg James 4:7: “Therefore submit to God. Resist the devil and he will flee from you.” We must use the Word of God, for the Word of God is powerful and such scriptures like the following can be used: Psalm 118:17: “I shall not die, but live, and declare the works of the LORD.” We must pray the Holy Spirit will fill every area of our life. We must read the Word of God daily. We must wear the armour of God at all times. We must be on guard against the enemy’s counter attacks. We must be in good fellowship with other Christians. We must walk continuously in forgiveness. We must praise God in all circumstances. We must keep the right company.

1 John 1:7: “But if we walk in the light as He is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus Christ His Son cleanses us from all sin.”
