How can one be delivered from demon possession?
No one can deliver a person possessed by demons, except by the power of Jesus Christ! Jesus is the only one who is the deliverer!
I had an experience once where God used me as His intermediary to deliver someone from demon possession. You can read what happened at https://sermonillustrator.org/1999/06/03/problematic-convulsing/ . What I remember most vividly about this opportunity is that God’s Spirit took over my voice box, giving me a boldness I had never experienced prior to this. That person was set free. I didn’t deliver her; God did through the merits of Jesus Christ. Although I had never learned how to do this, it was made clear to me to depend solely on Jesus and He is the One who would free that poor person.
Here are already a few very important aspects in delivering others from demon possession:
1. It cannot be learned.
2. You have to depend solely on Christ.
3. You have to be willing to let Jesus take over.
4. Jesus is the one who will deliver that person.
Now, God’s Word MUST confirm experiences, as experience can be subjective and misleading. The Bible is our only guide in everything, and if it confirms our experiences, we can know for sure that we have experienced the power of God. Let us explore how Jesus dealt with people who were possessed by demons:
Matt 17:14-20 “When they came to the crowd, a man approached Jesus and knelt before him. “Lord, have mercy on my son,” he said. “He has seizures and is suffering greatly. He often falls into the fire or into the water. I brought him to your disciples, but they could not heal him.”
“O unbelieving and perverse generation,” Jesus replied, “how long shall I stay with you? How long shall I put up with you? Bring the boy here to me.” Jesus rebuked the demon, and it came out of the boy, and he was healed from that moment.
Then the disciples came to Jesus in private and asked, “Why couldn’t we drive it out?”
He replied, “Because you have so little faith. I tell you the truth, if you have faith as small as a mustard seed, you can say to this mountain, ‘Move from here to there’ and it will move. Nothing will be impossible for you.” NIV
Here we encounter an episode where Jesus is face to face with desperate parents: their son was possessed by a demon and Jesus’ disciples were unable to heal him.
Notice how Jesus healed that boy. “He rebuked the demon, and it came out of the boy.” In other words he commanded that demon to leave that boy and the evil spirit had no choice but to leave that boy. By whose authority was Jesus doing this? By His OWN authority!
But why couldn’t the disciples heal that boy?
Jesus explained this: “Because you have so little faith”.
Faith is an important element in being able to heal someone from demon possession. Heb 11:6 “Without faith it is impossible to please God.” NIV You have to firmly believe that God has given you the power through the merits of His Son to deliver demon possessed people, otherwise you will experience defeat.
“But my faith is weak. There is no way I could do this.”
You are right! There is no way anyone can heal another. This is only possible if you depend on the power of Jesus Christ.
1 John 5:4-5 “For everyone born of God overcomes the world. This is the victory that has overcome the world, even our faith. Who is it that overcomes the world? Only he who believes that Jesus is the Son of God.” NIV
John clearly explains that those who overcome the world are those who have faith. He defines, then what that faith is : “he who believes that Jesus is the Son of God.” In other words, faith in the New Testament is not a concept, it is a person!
Gal 3:23-26 3 “Before this faith came, we were held prisoners by the law, locked up until faith should be revealed. So the law was put in charge to lead us to Christ that we might be justified by faith. Now that faith has come, we are no longer under the supervision of the law. You are all sons of God through faith in Christ Jesus.” NIV
The apostle Paul writes here “before this faith came”. In other words there was a time when that faith was not here! “. “Now that faith has come”. How has that faith come? “Through faith in Christ Jesus.” Jesus is the One who brings that faith. He is that faith!
If your faith is weak, depend on Jesus. He will give you the faith you need. He will perfect it. It is promised in God’s Word:
Heb 12:2 “Let us fix our eyes on Jesus, the author and perfecter of our faith, who for the joy set before him endured the cross, scorning its shame, and sat down at the right hand of the throne of God.” NIV
Why? Because Jesus is that faith and He is now living in you! 1 Cor 3:16 “Don’t you know that you yourselves are God’s temple and that God’s Spirit lives in you?” NIV
Wow! You have that faith! You may wonder now if you have that authority to cast out demons from people.
Matt 10:8 “Heal the sick, raise the dead, cleanse those who have leprosy, drive out demons. Freely you have received, freely give.” NIV
Jesus Himself spoke these words. It is addressed to all of His disciples. Are you a disciple of Jesus? If you are, Jesus has given you that power! Remember you don’t do this on your own. You depend on Jesus and on His merits for these healings to occur.
Mark 3:14-15 “He appointed twelve-designating them apostles-that they might be with him and that he might send them out to preach and to have authority to drive out demons.” NIV
This text confirms that the apostles had received that kind of authority.
Mark 16:17 “And these signs will accompany those who believe: In my name they will drive out demons…” NIV
That same authority given to the apostles is given to anyone who believes! That includes you! Proof is given all over the New Testament. Just like this one:
Acts 5:16 “Crowds gathered also from the towns around Jerusalem, bringing their sick and those tormented by evil spirits, and all of them were healed.” NIV
And
Acts 8:7 “With shrieks, evil spirits came out of many, and many paralytics and cripples were healed.” NIV
Now that we know about the authority given to us and the faith given to us in the person of Jesus Christ, let us be bold. By depending solely on the power and merits of Jesus Christ, we can approach those who need to be healed. Let us follow Jesus’ example!
Luke 4:33-35 “In the synagogue there was a man possessed by a demon, an evil spirit. He cried out at the top of his voice, “Ha! What do you want with us, Jesus of Nazareth? Have you come to destroy us? I know who you are-the Holy One of God!”
“Be quiet!” Jesus said sternly. “Come out of him!” Then the demon threw the man down before them all and came out without injuring him. NIV
Commanding in the name of Jesus Christ those spirits to leave, gives no other choice to these spirits but to leave!
You are welcome to study the other occurrences in the New Testament where Jesus freed people from demons. They all concur that there is power in the name of Jesus Christ and no demons can defy the order to leave, if it is done in the name and merits of the Son of God.
Be aware though that you need to be a believer of Jesus Christ to do so. Read what happened to those unbelievers who commanded evil spirits to leave in the name of Jesus:
Acts 19:13-16 “Some Jews who went around driving out evil spirits tried to invoke the name of the Lord Jesus over those who were demon-possessed. They would say, “In the name of Jesus, whom Paul preaches, I command you to come out.” Seven sons of Sceva, a Jewish chief priest, were doing this. [One day] the evil spirit answered them, “Jesus I know, and I know about Paul, but who are you?” Then the man who had the evil spirit jumped on them and overpowered them all. He gave them such a beating that they ran out of the house naked and bleeding.” NIV

In John 14 it states “I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father, except through me.” This is the only way that one can be delivered from demon possession. Through Jesus Christ our Father.
Also, scripture states, “Through [Christ] we… have access to the Father by one Spirit.” Ephesians 2:18. Also, scripture shows “For I am persuaded that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor powers, nor things present, nor things to come, nor height, nor depth, nor any other creature, shall be able to separate us from the love of God, which is in Christ Jesus our Lord” (Romans 8:38,39).
Satan can never possess one who is possessed by the Spirit of Christ.
We cannot deny the reality of Satan or to underestimate his power. There is no question that he is able to bring affliction upon the believers, even to the point of sickness, and, of course, by the same token, to affect the mind in ways that physical distress can affect it. But what is the believer’s response to these things? Both Peter and James are convinced of the effectiveness of resistance. Peter, referring to “our adversary the devil,” says, “Whom resist, steadfast in the faith.” (I Peter 5:9). James says, “Resist the devil and he will flee from you.” (4:7).
The fundamental principle in coping with Satan is simply to stand fast. We don’t do battle with him, we let Christ do that. What we need is the grace to stand and that we have in abundance. We may not feel good about it, but we will survive, because Satan is no match for Christ.
We can only deliver ourselves from evil through Jesus Christ our Savior.

There is only one way to be delivered from demon possession, and that is to yield completely to the Lord Jesus Christ that which is His already, bought and paid for on Calvary. We are all in demon possession when we take our hearts and yield them to the devil, and only the blood of Jesus Christ can cleanse us and make us whole.

Jesus said that it is through prayer and fasting.
Matthew 17:17-21 “Then Jesus answered and said, O faithless and perverse generation, how long shall I be with you? How long shall I suffer you? Bring him hither to me. And Jesus rebuked the devil; and he departed out of him: and the child was cured from that very hour. Then came the disciples to Jesus apart, and said, Why could not we cast him out? And Jesus said unto them, Because of your unbelief: for verily I say unto you, If ye have faith as a grain of mustard seed, ye shall say unto this mountain, Remove hence to yonder place; and it shall remove; and nothing shall be impossible unto you. Howbeit this kind goeth not out but by prayer and fasting.”
As with prayer for all sickness, it must be done according to thew Biblical pattern.
James 5:14-16 “Is any sick among you? Let him call for the elders of the church; and let them pray over him, anointing him with oil in the name of the Lord: And the prayer of faith shall save (heal) the sick, and the Lord shall raise him up; and if he have committed sins, they shall be forgiven him. Confess your faults (sins) one to another, and pray one for another, that ye may be healed. The effectual fervent prayer of a righteous man availeth much.”
Yours, because of Calvary,
