John 5:2-3 “Now there is at Jerusalem by the sheep market a pool, which is called in the Hebrew tongue Bethesda, having five porches. In these lay a great multitude of impotent folk, of blind, halt, withered, waiting for the moving of the water.” KJV
Many sick people crowded themselves around the Bethesda pool in Jesus’ days. Their attention was fixed to the moving of the water. They believed that whoever was first to reach the water once it moved, that person would be healed. They were all looking for the sign, the sign of moving water. The sad part about this, is that nobody really knew who was healed or not, as so many people jumped into the water by the first sign of any movement. There was so much commotion that even if no one were healed, nobody would have known about it and would have automatically assumed that someone had been healed.
Jesus approached that crowd near the pool. The sad part of it is that no one noticed His presence. They were too focused on signs. The Master Healer was among their midst and they preferred to look for a sign that may or may not heal them.
Only one man noticed Jesus, but only after a while. When Jesus asked him John 5:6 “Do you want to get well?” NIV It took some time before he responded. Only then was he healed by Jesus. He had been too focused for a sign, almost missing what he really was looking for.
John 4:48 “Unless you people see miraculous signs and wonders,” Jesus told him, “you will never believe.” NIV
A man had approached Jesus for the healing of his son and he wanted a sign. No sign could heal his son. The daddy only had to believe in the words of Jesus, and once he did that, his son was healed.
The laying of hands, anointing with oil, a prophetic word are not signs that will heal a person. Our focus should never be on these things. We should not base our healing on signs, otherwise we will be bitterly disappointed! Only Jesus can heal. This is what we need to believe, and Rom 10:17 “Consequently, faith comes from hearing the message, and the message is heard through the word of Christ.” NIV
