What Does the Bible Say About … BREAKING GENERATIONAL CURSES?

How do we break generational curses?

There is so much confusion in our world today that false teachings get easily infiltrated in our thoughts.  Our source to all truth is the Bible and anything that comes to us, has to be verified with the Bible.  Otherwise we will be easily led to unbiblical beliefs.

Are generational curses biblical?  Those who believe they are use texts like the second commandment: Ex 20:4-6 “You shall not make for yourself an idol in the form of anything in heaven above or on the earth beneath or in the waters below. You shall not bow down to them or worship them; for I, the LORD your God, am a jealous God, punishing the children for the sin of the fathers to the third and fourth generation of those who hate me, but showing love to a thousand [ generations] of those who love me and keep my commandments.” NIV  (see also Deut 5:8-10)

Does this text talk about generational curse?  It might appear so at first, but if you pay close attention to the text, you discover that the promised punishment is not generational related, as it specifies punishment towards “those who hate” God.  Those who love God. God shows “love to a thousand generations!  Basically this text is telling us that there are two groups of people in God’s eyes: 1. “them that love me” and 2. “those who hate me”.

Those that love God are free from any punishment from God Ex 34:6-7

“And he passed in front of Moses, proclaiming, “The LORD, the LORD, the compassionate and gracious God, slow to anger, abounding in love and faithfulness,  maintaining love to thousands, and forgiving wickedness, rebellion and sin. Yet he does not leave the guilty unpunished; he punishes the children and their children for the sin of the fathers to the third and fourth generation.” NIV

The guilty are the ones who will suffer the consequences.  If your grandfather was a sex addict and your dad was one too, and you decide to follow in their footsteps, you will have to face God one day and suffer the consequences!  However if you decide not to be influenced by your grandfather’s and dad’s influence, and you decide to obey God instead, no condemnation will be held against you!

Rom 8:1-2 “Therefore, there is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus,  because through Christ Jesus the law of the Spirit of life set me free from the law of sin and death.” NIV

The most powerful text that proves that generational curses are not Biblical, is found in Ezek 18:2-3. But first some background information about this text.  The Jews used to have a saying that if fathers ate sour grapes, the children’s teeth were set on edge.  This meant that if a father did something wrong, it would be held against the children.  What is God’s reaction concerning this saying?  Let us read in Ezek 18:2-3

“What do you people mean by quoting this proverb about the land of Israel: “‘The fathers eat sour grapes, and the children’s teeth are set on edge’?

“As surely as I live, declares the Sovereign LORD, you will no longer quote this proverb in Israel.” NIV

God did not agree at all with that saying!  Read a bit further in Ezek 18:19-20

“”Yet you ask, ‘Why does the son not share the guilt of his father?’ Since the son has done what is just and right and has been careful to keep all my decrees, he will surely live.  The soul who sins is the one who will die. The son will not share the guilt of the father, nor will the father share the guilt of the son. The righteousness of the righteous man will be credited to him, and the wickedness of the wicked will be charged against him.” NIV

This makes it clear that generational curses are not Biblical!  You are judged by your actions, not by the actions of your dad, not by the actions of your forefathers, but by your own actions.

My friend, if you are living in bondage of sin, may it be sex, drugs, or anything else, God can free you.  Jesus promised John 8:36 “So if the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed.” NIV  Don’t blame your behaviour on your dad or your grandfather, or your great grandfather.  You and you only are responsible for your actions.

The good news is that forgiveness and deliverance is possible. Zech 4:6 “Not by might nor by power, but by my Spirit.” NIV You can be set free through the power of God’s Holy Spirit!

Jesus made it possible for you to be freed from your addiction.  He paid the ultimate price on Golgotha so you could be freed and be a “new creation”. 2 Cor 5:17-19 “Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; the old has gone, the new has come! All this is from God, who reconciled us to himself through Christ and gave us the ministry of reconciliation: that God was reconciling the world to himself in Christ, not counting men’s sins against them. And he has committed to us the message of reconciliation.” NIV

Would you like to be free my friend?  It is still not too late.  Why don’t you invite Jesus in your heart right now.  Come to http://www.answers2prayer.org/saviours_call.html and answer His call of deliverance.

BREAKING CURSES

I have found the following materials helpful as I minister in Africa. The context in which the materials have been developed is not limited to the Africa culture. As you know, the devil is everywhere. He has not respect of persons. He operates without racial or geographical barrier. He is not careful at all. As he deals with the African people he is also dealing with the people in the West. Let no one deceive himself that the devil operates in a particular environment. He is not confined at all. He is going about seeking whom he may devour.

No wonder the scripture enjoins us in

Ephesians 6: 10-13

“Finally, be strong in the lord and in his mighty power. Put on the full armor of God o that you can take your stand against the devil’s schemes. For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms”.

Christian race is not for the careless. The careless ones are being overtaken by the devil. All that Paul recommended for the journey should be adhered to very strictly without compromise.

I have discovered that curses runs from generation to generation. It has affected the spiritual lives of many. It has destroyed matrimonial homes. In Africa for examples, when there is a curse in a particular family it can spread unto as many generations as possible if it is not broken.

The following materials should be of tremendous help. If you have questions or you need counselling on this topic, I will be willing to assist you.

“Curses exist and are very real even in this day and age. They are present in both the Old and the New Testament. They are the invisible block to healing, deliverance, or salvation. Remember that God never changes and His Word never changes. In Deuteronomy 28 He sets before us the blessings and the curses, and tells us to choose which we will. We are told that if we obey all His commandments (teachings of scripture) that we will be blessed to 1,000 generations and that if we are disobedient we would be cursed to the fourth generation. Before proceeding further, please read Deuteronomy 28:3-13; Deuteronomy 28:16-68; Proverbs 26:2; and Deuteronomy 30:19.

There are three kinds of curses:

1. Self-inflicted by one’s own words

2. Those spoken over, formed against, or directed at oneself or another person by others.

3. Generations curses.

Self-inflicted curses and curses spoken upon someone by others must be bound, loosed, and broken in the Name of Christ Jesus, binding Satan first. A prerequisite for the breaking of all curses is repentance on behalf of others, or oneself, for what was said intentionally or not intentionally. You will find that in general, prayer does not break curses. Repentance and declaration of a break of the curse is what is required. Generations curses cannot be broken at all, until all sins of all ancestors and predecessors on all sides of all of ones’ families (and that of their spouses) are confessed back to the families’ origins (God will know what those sins are even though we do not), asking, with repentance, for forgiveness for all of their sins and in particular, for the specific sin or sins which brought the generations curse into the family line.

Then we speak repentance for any people whom these ancestors may have hurt and ask the Lord’s forgiveness. Suspect the presence of a curse when circumstances are unchanged by prayer. Again, prayer does not break a curse, only repentance, followed by oral proclamation of breaking the curse in Christ Jesus’ Name. Follow this by speaking a blessing upon the person.

Only this is effective and scriptural.

Suspect a generations curse when you see:

1. Multiple cases of the same problem occur in the family line, such as multiple premature deaths, multiple cases of a particular disease such as diabetes, multiple cases of alcoholism, multiple cases of divorce, stroke, heart disease, accidents, multiple family members practicing fornication or other repetitive sins (If the parents or grandparents were fornicators, the children and grandchildren will be fornicators according to the spiritual laws which govern curses).

2. Deliverance, healing, or salvation are not received

3. Misfortunes of the same kind or another keep happening repeatedly

4. Personal performance at work or at home is continually impaired or hampered despite one’s best efforts, or is continually frustrated so that nothing seems to help or to be able to change or improve it.

5. You, your work, or efforts are continually or repeatedly opposed or destroyed by people.

Common manifestation of curses are as follows:

. Continual financial problems.

. Continual lack of prosperity

. Chronic physical or mental illnesses.

. Premature death.

. Multiple or repetitive accidents or injuries, particularly of the same type.

. Chronic strife or arguments or problems with interpersonal relationships.

. Hereditary physical or emotional problems.

. Multiple manifestations of the same kind of physical, circumstantial, or emotional problems in the family line, such as multiple cases of suicide, etc.

. Chronic torment.

. Poor eating or sleeping habits in infants or children.

. Failure to thrive in young infants or sickliness

. Business failures, single or repeated

. Inability to conceive children or multiple miscarriages

There are many other manifestations of curses but I have described the more common and more general manifestations. The presence of a curse is always discerned through the Spirit.

The appropriate remedy is the repentance and breaking the curse in the Name of Christ Jesus.

Curses and blessings cross over from the Old Testament to the New Testament unchanged.

We see this in the New Testament on several occasions where the apostles cursed evil acts (Mark 11:21, Galatians 1:8, 9). Saint Paul speaks a curse upon all those who preach “another gospel” or “another Jesus.” And again, in the New Testament, we see Jesus cursing the fig three that bore no fruit. Here the fig tree symbolizes sin, the fruit of sin, or an evil work since God’s way is always increase by the bearing of good fruit.

Noteworthy is the fact that only born-again, Spirit-filled believers can be free from curses. The reason for this is that freedom from curses along with all the other benefits of the Kingdom are the right of inheritance of those who inherit the Kingdom of God; the Bible tells us that one cannot enter the Kingdom unless one is “born again” first. The Bible is quite clear that the blessings of the Kingdom are for the people of the Kingdom.

Open doors to curses are as follows:

. Involvement in the occult sciences such as witchcraft or Satanism, or organizations using the occult sciences in an open or disguised manner such as: Yoga, transcendental meditation, white witchcraft, black witchcraft, Zen, Buddhism, Hinduism, all forms of physical Yoga and mental Yoga practices (the physical and mental disciplines of demonic religions), – Freemasonry and other fraternal organizations having secret rituals found in witchcraft or preaching a method of salvation of their own, magic, sorcery, astrology, palmistry, numerology, divination (telling the future) through psychic channelling, New Age movement and practices,

. pagan religions, telepathy, clairvoyance, séances,

. Ouija board, tattoos, etc

. Involvement in idolatry

. Disobedience to God’s Word

. Rebellion against God

. Pursuing sexual sins or perversions, or all sin for that matter.

. Self-inflicted negative words or those inflicted by others.

. Ancestral sins.

. Suicide

. Dishonoring parents or those in authority.

. Unforgiveness, bitterness, resentment, anger.

. Manipulation and intimidation for the purpose of domination of others

(witchcraft in the church (Galatians 3).

. Cursing God.

. Compromising the doctrines of Christ.

. Manipulation or defrauding of others.

. Wilful cursing of others. Tattoos.

. Coveting cursed objects. Defilement of self or others.

. Desecration of the Body of Christ (the Church). Anti-Semitism.

. Divorce for reasons other than adultery (or perhaps, abandonment).

. Touching the anointing or the anointed of God. Failure to tithe.

To break a self-inflicted curse through ones own negative words spoken over oneself, or those inflicted by others, pray something like this:

In Christ Jesus’ Name

“Father, I take authority over all negative words and the curse spoken by (me, or [name]) binding Satan first. I bind, loose, and break that curse, repenting for what I said (or for the other party) and asking your forgiveness. And I decree the curse now broken in Christ Jesus’ Name. I speak blessing upon (name of person cursed) in the Name of Christ Jesus.” (The blessing spoken upon the person should be the opposite of whatever the curse was). Then tell the Lord that you do this for His glory.

Generations curses can be broken off of oneself or others by praying something like this:

“Lord Jesus Christ, I confess to you all of the sins of my ancestors and predecessors on all sides of all of my families that and my spouses families back to our families origins, repenting of all of their sins, and in particular, of all of their sins that brought the curse of (name that problem) into our family line. I repent of all of those ancestral sins and ask for Your forgiveness for what they did, also repenting of all their witchcraft or any other acts of evil. I ask for forgiveness for whomever they may have hurt as a consequence of these sins.

“I now bind, loose, and break this generation curse off of my spouse and me (and any other saved family members), breaking all ties, bonds, cords and soul-ties with all of those past ancestral sins and any other of their acts of evil. I decree that we are free and this curse is broken, for it is written that in that day you shall decree a thing and it shall come to pass. Your Word says that where there is Christ, there is liberty. Your Word says that He who the Son sets free is indeed free.”

“I stand on Your Word, Lord Jesus Christ, decreeing this generations curse broken once and for all time and I release the blessing upon (name of person or self), all Finally, the following are things which you should speak a curse “at it’s roots” upon, in Christ Jesus’ Name:

All the seedings, works, plans and activities of Satan. All seedings, works, plans, and activities of each and every evil spirit manifesting against you, to or through any individual, organization, adversary, or would-be adversary, this day, from any day past, or any day to come; all occult businesses or enterprises or organizations that come across your path; all disease at it’s roots including all cancers and cancer cells in a person’s body, commanding them to die, cursing them at their roots in the Name of Christ Jesus; all dens of iniquity including bars, adult books stores, masonic temples and organizations, false churches and false religions, gambling establishments, etc; the fruits of all demonic strongholds in a person, community, nation, etc.; the fruits of all acts of witchcraft that they not prosper; the sin and fruits of sin in a person’s life, that it not prosper; all opposition, hindrance, interference, or obstructions (at their roots), to the hearing or propagation of the Gospel of Christ”. culled by permission from the book : Spiritual Warfare Prayers by Bern Zumpano.

This question is based on Exodus 20:5. The answer to breaking the curse is found in the next verse–verse 6. God shows mercy to those that love Him and keep His commandments. The curse is only for those that hate Him!!! The Good News in the Old Testament!

I know that in the past my family has had problems that they would create because of their own actions or decisions that they made in life. These decisions and actions that they made or took caused future problems for their children and grandchildren. I know that every decision or action that we take in life we need to have God right by our side. I know that we all have times when we try to walk in the wrong direction or we try to hurry our decisions. We think we are so in tuned with God that we don’t need to seek Him on a daily basis. But that is letting your guard down. There are many things that I see in my life that are the result of what my great grandparents did when they were growing up and raising my parents. So yes there can be generational curses that we put on our future family because we decide to live life without God every step of the way.

I challenge everyone to make your decisions in life count for God. Make every action you take in situations and make sure that God shines through. Because if we want our children to deal with situations right and not have to worry all the time of things that are really not necessary for them to worry about, then we need to place everything at the feet of God and let Him have those problems. We can’t walk by and take back those problems either. When we lay those at Jesus’ feet and we GIVE them to Him to deal with then we are truly breaking that generational curse. But if you keep going back and picking those things up then you are not breaking that “curse” you are just passing it down to your children and their children and their children. So be careful in what decisions you make in life. It could be the wrong decision. God bless you all.

Debbie

My answer to this was to ask God to put all sin I have brought onto my child all back onto me and to please not allow the devil to attack her because of anything I have done.

To believe in a curse, is a disregard in God’s Divine Plan, replacing it with destiny. We are born with a spiritual nature and a human nature, which is constantly at war against all that is divine. It takes prayer, inner strength, through faith, hope and love to create the kind of life we want.

The brain collects data which we see, hear, participate and write. It is influenced by our surroundings, associations, acted out thoughts, and undisciplined emotions. We can influence others through example, sharing experiences, or by others telling of what we have done, adding to “an existing course.”.

We have a free will, which God infuses in our soul at birth for us to employ in our own salvation, by using it to do what is moral, ethical. When we don’t, consequences follow. Some of us learn, changing our pattern for the better, some of may not have that knowledge, training, fortitude or choose not to. So, as an excuse for our actions, we may feel comforted not in taking responsibility for our acts lacking fortitude, appearing to be “a curse.”

“Generational curses” imply diabolical intervention. God permits some things to happen because we act upon them, feeling the pain, standing by us, and willing to forgive us. But unless it is a disease that is considered “genetics”, “curses” imply fatalism, which is denial of a free will, creating a “destiny” which suggests we do not have the freedom to learn and redirect ourselves from that which has been destructive and/ or painful ln the the past. It also intimates there is no free will, our lives are predestined, and that God dictates every our every action, controlling our every response, making us “robotic.” In His Love, Rose

1Thess 5:11 Therefore encourage one another and build each other up, just as in fact you are doing.

MY PRAYER… Give me strength and patience, O God, that I may be as loving, gentle, and patient with others as you have been with me. Through Jesus my Lord and hero I pray. Amen.
