What Does the Bible Say About … The DEFINITION of TRUTH?

What is truth?

This image has an empty alt attribute; its file name is Bible.jpg

What is the truth?  It is not a church, it is not a doctrine.  The truth is a person.

John 14:6:  “Jesus answered, ‘I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.’”

Jesus is the embodiment of God’s Word.

John 1:1-2,14 “In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.  He was with God in the beginning… The Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us. We have seen his glory, the glory of the One and Only, who came from the Father, full of grace and truth.” NIV

The Bible contains God’s truth, and points constantly towards Jesus.

2 Tim 3:16-17 “All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness, so that the man of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work.” NIV

Heb 12:2 “Let us fix our eyes on Jesus, the author and perfecter of our faith.” NIV

Will you follow only Jesus in your life? Or do you prefer to make compromises?  The choice in yours.  Don’t base your faith on a human person or on any institution.  Base it on Jesus.  Only him can set you free

John 8:32:  “Then you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.”

Will you accept him now completely in your life?

Do so now by answering the Saviour’s Call!

PREAMBLE:

The Hebrew term ’emeth’, often rendered “truth”, may designate that which is firm, trustworthy, stable, faithful, true or established as fact (Ex. 18:21; 34:6; De 13:14, Jos 2:12; 2 Chr. 18:15, Ps 15:2.) The Greek word a.lethei.a stnds in contrast with falsehood or unrighteousnes and denotes that which conforms to fact of to what is right and proper (Mark 5:33; 12:32; Lu 4:25; Johsn 3:21; Ro 2:8, 1 Cor. 13:6). A number of other original language expressions can, depending upon the context, also be translated ‘truth’.

THE ALMIGHTY GOD IS THE TRUTH

God is the God of truth (Ps. 31:5). He is faithful in all his dealings. His promises are sure; for He cannot lie. (Numbers 23:19; I Sa 15:29; Ps 89:35; Titus 1:2, Heb 6:17, 18). He judges according to truth, that is, according to the way things really are, and not on the basis of outward appearance (Ro. 2:2).

In your present state of heart, are what you are doing based on the truth?. Is the Almighty God in control of your heart? Do you realise that your deeds will be accounted for on the judgement day before the God of truth?

Everything that emanates from Him is pure and without defect. His judicial decisions, law, commandments, and word are truth (Ne 9:13, Ps 19:9). They are always right and proper, and they stand in opposition to all unrighteousness and error.

Are you truthful in your marriage relationship?. God instituted marriage. He expects your relationship to be pure and without deceit. If you discover that your business life is not truthful based on the Almighty God, you should do something about it today. The God of Truth is making a plea that you should refuse falsehood, deceit and ungodliness.

WHAT IS THE MEANING OF THE STATEMENT THAT JESUS CHRIST IS HIMSELF THE TRUTH?

Like His Father, the Almighty God, Jesus Christ is “full of undeserved kindness and truth”, (John 1:14, Eph. 4:21). While on earth, He always spoke the truth as He had received it from His Father (John 8:40, 45, 46). He committed no sin, nor was decesption found in his mouth (I Peter 2:22). Jesus Christ represented things as they really were. Besides being “full of truth” Jesus, was himself “the TRUTH” and truth came through Him. He declared: “I am the way and the truth and the life” (John 14:6.) And the apostle John wrote: “The Law was given through Moses, kindness and truth came to be throgh Jesus Christ” – John 1:17.

John’s words do not mean that the Law given through Moses was erroneous. It, too, was truth, conforming to God’ standard of holiness, righteousness and godliness (Ps 119:151; Ro 7:10-12). However, the Law served as a tutor leading to Christ (Ga 3:23-25 and had a shadow, or prophetic picture, of greater realities. (Heb. 8:4, 5; 10:1-5).

Accordingly, “the truth” came to be through Jesus” in the sense that he put the things foreshadowed by the Law into the realm of actual truth. As he himself was no shadow but the reality, Jesus was “the truth”. Jesus also became ‘a minister in behalf of God’s righteousness in that he fulfilled God’s promises made to the forefathers of the Jews by ministering to the circumcised Jews and proselytes – Rom 15:8).

GOD’S WORD IS TRUTH

God’s Word presents things as they really are, revealing God’s attritubtes, purposes, and commands, as well as the true state of affairs among mandkind. God’s Word of truth shows that what is required for one to be sanctified or made holy, set apart for use by God in his service, and then to remain in a sanctified state. Hence, Jesus could pray: ‘Sancitify them by means of the truth; your word is truth’ (John 17:17).

WALKING IN THE TRUTH

Those who desire to gain approval of God should walk in His truth and serve Him in truth and in Spirit (Jos 24:14; I Sa 12:24; Ps 25:4, 5, Isa 38:3). This would include abiding by God’s requirements and serving Him in faithfulness and sincerity. Are you born again? You should be born of the Spirit of Truth (Jesus). John 3:3-7. All your righteous works cannot save you from your sins. You must be born again to enter into His Kingdom of Truth.

CONCLUSION:

There must be a willingness to remove what is sinful to maintain personal and congregational purity to remain and walk in the TRUTH. This is urgent and should be taken so seriously. You should not delay!

God bless you!

I was once in a meeting where the minister was trying to define the difference between ‘truth’ and ‘faith’. He used a family with small children sitting in the front row as an example. He said, “Mrs. Jones knows that these children are hers, she carried them and delivered them. That is truth, Mr. Jones believes they are his, that is faith”. Truth is the absolute knowledge that something is so.

When Jesus walked among men, HE claimed to BE ‘The Truth’.

John 1:14-AV And the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us, (and we beheld his glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father,) full of grace and truth.

John 14:6-AV Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me.

John 18:37-AV Pilate therefore said unto him, Art thou a king then? Jesus answered, Thou sayest that I am a king. To this end was I born, and for this cause came I into the world, that I should bear witness unto the truth. Every one that is of the truth heareth my voice.

So who was Jesus?

John 1:1-AV In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.

John 1:2-AV The same was in the beginning with God.

John 1:3-AV All things were made by him; and without him was not any thing made that was made.

John 1:10-AV He was in the world, and the world was made by him, and the world knew him not.

John 1:11-AV He came unto his own, and his own received him not.

John 1:12-AV But as many as received him, to them gave he power to become the sons of God, [even] to them that believe on his name:

This passage is telling us that the Word was with God and was God. The Word is the creator of all things. The Word became flesh in the person of Jesus who gave power to all who receive Him to become the sons of God, even those who believe on His name.

So far we have Jesus (The Word), who is also God, claiming to be ‘truth’. The bible also tells us that God (Father, Son and Holy Ghost) cannot tell a lie. This is not possible because God is ‘truth’. Here are some references to the Holy Spirit also being ‘truth’ and the impossibility of God lying.

John 15:26-AV But when the Comforter is come, whom I will send unto you from the Father, [even] the Spirit of truth, which proceedeth from the Father, he shall testify of me:

Hebrews 6:18-AV That by two immutable things, in which [it was] impossible for God to lie, we might have a strong consolation, who have fled for refuge to lay hold upon the hope set before us:

So much for the God head being the ‘truth’. Hardly surprising as we are dealing with an intelligence so vast it is beyond our ability to comprehend. However, God also gave us a tangible reference to the ‘truth’ that we can lay hold of whenever we like. We call it the ‘Bible’. Many make the claim that the bible is a collection of books written by some 40 different authors over a time span of some 2000 years. How could it ALL be truth? Surely, since it was written by men, it must contain some errors? Well it’s enemies would have you believe that, but it is not so. Jesus, when speaking of the bible said;

John 5:39-AV Search the scriptures; for in them ye think ye have eternal life: and they are they which testify of me.

How could the bible, written by some 40 different authors, be consistent enough to have eternal life in them? And to testify of Jesus, bear witness to the ‘truth’?

2Peter 1:21-AV For the prophecy came not in old time by the will of man: but holy men of God spake [as they were] moved by the Holy Ghost.

2Timothy 3:16-AV All scripture [is] given by inspiration of God, and [is] profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness:

There we have it. All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and God can not lie. The whole bible is ‘truth’. This brings us to a very important principle regarding bible study. Most people in the early stages of their Christian walk, will read the bible and notice what appears to be contradictions and conflicts in it. If we believe in God, that God is ‘truth’, and that He cannot lie, we also have to believe His stated claims that the scriptures are also ‘truth’. If we study them and find an apparent contradiction or conflict, it simply means that we have gotten something confused and will have to continue the search until the conflict is resolved. It is our error, not His. Even then, we do not get a completely clear picture, and will not while locked into this life.

1Corinthians 13:12-AV For now we see through a glass, darkly; but then face to face: now I know in part; but then shall I know even as also I am known.

We now have ‘Truth’ = God (Father, Son and Holy Ghost) = Scriptures. It is a complete package. We either believe all of it or none of it. Some like to fiddle with the creation record, trying to make it fit with the theory of evolution. Some like to change a law here and there to better fit with their preferred lifestyle. Some even like to believe what Satan has said, such as his first lie to Eve; “Thou shall not surely die”. None of these myths can stand the test of exposure to the true word of God. However, because mankind is inherently lazy, he will believe a lie sooner than seek the truth for himself. It is recommended that no one should just believe what has been said, even by a minister of religion, until they have tested the information by comparing it with the ‘truth’ contained in the written Word of God.

Over the years Satan has planted much error into mankind’s understanding of the things of God. So successful has he been that it is said that “he would deceive if it were possible, the very elect”. Satan is doing his very best to deceive the whole Christian church into believing myths rather than truth. Do not be deceived. Search the scriptures for yourself. You have the means to expose the lies.

Acts 17:11-AV These were more noble than those in Thessalonica, in that they received the word with all readiness of mind, and searched the scriptures daily, whether those things were so.

I pray that God will add His understanding to all those who prayerfully study His Word.

Jesus is the truth. John 14:6 says –

Jesus said to him,

“I am the way, and the truth, and the life; no one comes to the Father, but by me.”

Jesus is the truth – all truth. He is the ‘Living Word of God’ To know the truth – we must know Jesus / God – to know him, we must first come to him and seek / study His Word through study of the scriptures, through talking with Him in prayers and praise.

Ask – knock – seek ; with all our heart. Sounds simple, but sometimes the simplest things are the most difficult.

Truth is! It stands without support, without need for justification, and is complete.

Truth: Is not a something it is a person! Truth cannot exist outside the Person of Jesus Christ!

I was thrilled to see that you asked this question and wanted feedback on the subject. I love truth because truth is Godly in all way’s, shapes and aspects. Truth is anything that is Godly. Truth is anything that we have done right but could not take credit for, because humans naturally don’t do anything right. However, through us, God can do no wrong. So if we stumble or we aren’t truthful, than it was because of our own doing. This is why we must give all the praise and glory to God for anything that we do right. Jesus Christ is the right hand of God, which means that Jesus Christ is truth. So as Jesus said himself, “I am the way, the truth and the life, no man may come unto the Father except, through me”. So the truth to it’s root and core is, JESUS CHRIST!!

I think there has been a grammatical error. The question is better posed, WHO is Truth? The Word says, I am the Way, the Truth and the Light.” The Word says that God is Love. If we believe that the Father and the Son are One, then we must believe that REAL LOVE is found in truth and real TRUTH is found in LOVE. We know that God can not be where there are LIES; therefore, He is ever present with His Son and if His Son is in us, then He is ever present to and with us. When we walk in His Love and in Him, then we walk in truth. We recognize Truth, we know His voice and Truth follows us all the days of our lives.
