What Does the Bible Say About … WHY WE USE the WORD “TRINITY”?

If the word “Trinity” is not in the Bible, where did it come from?

Although not in the Bible, this word was used for the first time by Theophilus of Antioch (181A.D. See Theophilus’ work called “Ad Autolycum” Chapter 15 of Book 2) expressing a great Biblical truth. The word “trinity” means that there are three distinct persons (Father, Son, and Holy Spirit) within the being and activity of God. The three distinct persons of the Godhead are mentioned in the Great Commission: Matt 28:19 “Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit”.

It is mentioned in the blessing pronounced by the apostle Paul in 2 Cor 13:14: “May the grace of the Lord Jesus Christ, and the love of God, and the fellowship of the Holy Spirit be with you all.”

But how can three distinct persons be in one Godhead?

It’s actually quite simple. We need to go back to the Hebraic notion of being one. Let’s look in Gen 2:24: “For this reason a man will leave his father and mother and be united to his wife, and they will become one flesh.”

Was Adam a distinct being from Eve? Yes. Was Eve a distinct being from Adam? Yes. But how could they be united into one flesh? Very simple: through marriage.

We, as Christians, are encouraged in very similar terms to be one, to be united for the good cause: the cause of the gospel. Jesus, in one of His last prayers, asked: John 17:20-23 “My prayer is not for them alone. I pray also for those who will believe in me through their message, that all of them may be one, Father, just as you are in me and I am in you. May they also be in us so that the world may believe that you have sent me. I have given them the glory that you gave me, that they may be one as we are one: I in them and you in me. May they be brought to complete unity to let the world know that you sent me and have loved them even as you have loved me.”

Will you join me and be one for His cause?

This is in response to the question about the Trinity; Mark 1:10-11, as Jesus was being baptized by John and came out of the water, heaven was torn open and the Spirit descended on Him like a dove. Then a voice came from heaven, “You are my son, whom I love, with you, I am well pleased. The Spirit descended on Jesus, the Son of God. Three person, God, The Son, and the Spirit. Romans 5:5-8; God poured out His love into our hearts by the Holy Spirit, whom He has given us. Christ died for the ungodly. Three, God, Holy Spirit, Christ.

John 14:1-17; Jesus tells about His Father and how His Father will give us another Counselor, the Spirit of Truth. Three persons; God, the Father, Jesus, and the Spirit of Truth.
